Many families can only go to the Caminito del Rey in July or August, when the kids are off school and the adults are on vacation. The reality is that summer is the most physically demanding time of year — but with the right preparation, it can be thoroughly enjoyed.
Why summer is different at the Caminito
The Gaitanes gorge acts as a heat collector. The rock walls absorb sun all day long and radiate it back into the interior of the canyon. On a 33°C day in Málaga, some of the most enclosed stretches of the Caminito can reach 38-40°C.
On top of that there's no wind inside the canyon (the walls block it) and the humidity generated by the river. It's not dry heat — it's humid heat that clings to you.
The park has a protocol for closing due to extreme heat alerts. If the forecast exceeds certain thresholds (not officially published, but around 40°C inside the park), the route closes for the day. If you have a ticket, you get a refund — but the trip has already been made.
The most important rule: the first time slot
In summer, the difference between entering at 8am and entering at 11am is the difference between having a good time and a mediocre one. The first kilometers in the early slot have bearable temperatures, the light is lateral and beautiful, and the canyon hasn't yet accumulated the day's heat.
By 11am, the sun has already been heating the walls for hours. In the most enclosed stretches, the temperature is already significantly higher than in the morning.
If you're going in summer: first time slot, no exceptions.
Water: more than you think you need
The rule of 1 liter per person applies under normal conditions. In summer you need to increase that:
- Adults in good physical shape: 1.5-2 liters
- Adults who tend to sweat a lot: 2 liters
- Children: 1-1.5 liters (children dehydrate faster and give fewer warning signs)
- Older adults: 1.5-2 liters (the sensation of thirst decreases with age)
Water is the factor that most determines how you'll feel at the end of the route. Don't ration it. Drink before you're thirsty.
A useful practice: bring electrolyte tablets or sports drink for one of the liters. Sweat causes salt loss, and muscle cramps at the end of the route are more common in summer.
Clothing for summer
What seems logical (but isn't the best option): a cotton short-sleeve t-shirt.
What works better: a breathable technical short-sleeve hiking shirt. Cotton soaks up sweat and stays damp and clingy. Technical fibers wick away moisture and cool you down. In extreme heat conditions, the difference is noticeable.
Cap or visor: essential for the unshaded stretches. The helmet covers your head, but when you wear it for 3 hours in full sun, the temperature inside the helmet rises. The cap goes under the helmet (if it's wide-brimmed, it interferes with the helmet — a visor or low-profile cap is better).
Sunscreen: apply it before entering, not after being on the route for half an hour. The most exposed stretches are at the beginning.
Shorts: perfectly fine. There's no risk of chafing on the route under normal conditions.
Signs that someone in the group needs to stop
On summer excursions with groups, it's important to recognize the symptoms of someone overheating:
- Very red face and very hot skin (not sweaty — hot, red skin without sweat is a sign of heatstroke, an emergency)
- Confusion or disorientation
- Intense headaches
- Nausea
Mild heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, mild dizziness) is treated by stopping in the shade, drinking water with electrolytes, and resting. Heatstroke (dry, very hot skin, confusion) is a medical emergency.
If there are serious signs, route staff can call emergency services. Don't try to get someone out of the canyon on your own in an emergency.
Closure due to heat: how to anticipate it
The park's official website publishes closure alerts. If there's a heat closure for your date, you'll be notified by email and offered a date change or refund.
What you can do:
- Check the temperature forecast for "Ardales, Málaga" 48-72 hours ahead
- If the forecast high exceeds 37-38°C, there's a real risk of closure
- If the forecast includes wind (even light), the risk of closure drops considerably

Summer at the Caminito isn't the Caminito at its best — that would be spring or autumn. But with these precautions, it's thoroughly enjoyable, and many families do it every year without major issues.
If you have a ticket for summer, now you know how to prepare. If you don't have a ticket yet and are checking availability, you'll find that July-August has more openings than May — but demand is still high on weekends.
