Where to Stay Near Caminito del Rey

From camping by the reservoir to hotels in Málaga. What makes sense depending on your entry time slot and how much time you have for the trip.

Where to Stay Near Caminito del Rey

The question of where to stay near the Caminito del Rey depends a lot on when your ticket is for. If it's at 9am and you live in Málaga, you can go and come back in a day. If it's at 8am and you live in Madrid or outside Spain, it makes sense to stay nearby so you don't have to wake up absurdly early.

Here are the real options, ordered by proximity to the entrance.

Right at the entrance: El Chorro and Ardales

El Chorro (north access)

El Chorro is the village closest to the Caminito's north access. It's small — just a handful of houses, a couple of bars, and rural accommodations — but it has the advantage of being less than a kilometer from the control booth.

Key advantage: if your ticket is for first thing in the morning, you can wake up at a relaxed pace, have breakfast at the village bar, and walk to the entrance. No car, no parking, no extreme early wake-up.

What you'll find:

  • Rental apartments and rural houses (best to book in advance on vacation rental platforms)
  • The El Chorro Tourist Complex, with bungalows and a campsite by the reservoir
  • A bar or two with a set lunch menu

The surroundings are spectacular: the El Chorro reservoir with the gorge's walls in the background. If you stay here, the sunset over the water is worth it on its own.

Ardales (south access)

Ardales is the town closest to the south access, about 4 km away. It's larger than El Chorro — it has a supermarket, restaurants, and a somewhat wider range of accommodation.

When it makes sense: if you plan to do the route and then stay to explore the area (the Campillos lagoon, the Guadalhorce reservoir, and the Ardales caves with cave paintings are all close by).

What you'll find:

  • Rural houses and small hotels
  • Restaurants with local cuisine — chivo (goat) Málaga-style is the area's signature dish
  • The Gaitanes Gorge Natural Area can be explored from here beyond just the Caminito route

Mid-range area: Álora and Pizarra

About 20-25 minutes by car from the entrance, these towns in the Guadalhorce Valley offer more hotel options without being too far away.

Álora

A charming town perched on a rock outcrop, with a Moorish castle at the top. It has small hotels and rural guesthouses with good value for money. About 20 minutes from the north access.

Pizarra

More geared toward regional tourism than international visitors. More affordable prices. About 25 minutes from the north access.

Convenient base: Málaga city (55 km)

Málaga has all the hotel options of a major city — from budget hostels to four-star hotels in the historic center. The distance to the Caminito is about 55-60 km, roughly an hour by car.

When it makes sense to use Málaga as a base:

  • If you're combining the Caminito with other plans on the coast or in the city (the historic center, the Alcazaba, Málaga's Art Week...)
  • If you're traveling in a group and prefer the capital's restaurant and nightlife options
  • If you're flying in — Málaga's airport has direct connections across Europe

What to factor in: if your ticket is for 8am or 9am, leaving from Málaga means getting up at 6:30-7am. Uncomfortable but manageable.

If you're going on an organized tour from Málaga: the pickup point is usually in central Málaga, which simplifies everything — it doesn't matter where you stay as long as you're near the bus stop.

Camping: the cheapest and closest option

In the El Chorro area there's regulated camping available. It's the cheapest option and also the one that immerses you most in the surroundings: waking up by the reservoir with the gorge right in front of you.

Who it makes sense for: travelers with their own tent, couples or groups of friends who enjoy the outdoors, and anyone who wants to use the day before the Caminito for rock climbing routes in El Chorro (a benchmark climbing area in southern Spain).

What to keep in mind: there's no free/wild camping in the park area. You have to use the designated zones. Check availability in advance during high season.

Summary table

Area Distance to access Indicative price Best for
El Chorro <1 km €60-120/night Early morning ticket, peace and quiet
Ardales 4 km €50-90/night Exploring the surrounding area
Álora / Pizarra 20-25 km €40-80/night Balance of price and proximity
Málaga 55 km €50-150/night Combining with the city or flying in
El Chorro camping <1 km €10-20/person Tight budget, outdoor atmosphere

Indicative prices per night in mid-season, may vary significantly.

If you don't have your Caminito ticket yet and are planning where to stay, remember that the hardest thing to coordinate is usually getting a ticket for the time slot you want — not the accommodation. Start with the ticket and adjust your accommodation afterward.
